What is a saxophone?
What does it do? What function does it serve? Is it for entertainment? Is it art? Can you play Baker Street? What's it made out of? How does it work? Does it weigh a lot? Do you play Jazz? Can you do the Pink Panther Theme? Are you cool? What metal is it made out of? What are you trying to say? Is that true? What are the dimensions of your mouthpiece? What strength reeds do you play on? How old are you? Do you know Alex Naughton? Where are you from? Why do you play it? What did you do three weeks ago? Do you know Lizzie Myers? How do you swing in 13/8? What did you get for your 4th birthday? Why do you play it? Is that true? How much do you make? Is that true? Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? Are you happy? Why do you play it?
But seriously, why do you play it?
Why do you play it?
Instrumentation
Alto Saxophone 1
Alto Saxophone 2
Alto Saxophone 3
Alto Saxophone 4
Duration
9 minutes
Staging Directions
The performers should sit in a semi-circle in the order of their significance (1, 2, 3, 4).
If there is the option of lighting, each soloist should have an individual spotlight on each of them, as though they are the most significant member of the ensemble. As to the colour, it should be the same for each performer.
The performers should look like and act like they are the soloist for the performance of the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto and should look distinctly like a soloist.
For costume, the ensemble has the option of either being in all black or wearing soloist attire (think all show, no substance).
If the work is to be performed first or as an encore, the performers should come on stage being very over-the-top and celebratory of their talent and ability. Think if Liberace played the saxophone.
Premiere
Performed as part of the Hadit Collective Concert, "The Adolphe Bastard" at the Ledger Recital Room in Glasgow -18th of June, 2019.
