To celebrate the Govan's Reminiscence Group turning 30 years old, The Glasgow Barons worked alongside award winning folk singer Ainsley Hamill to create a series of songs talking about the heroes and heroines of war - time Govan which were then performed with the orchestra as part of the Glasgow's West End Festival.
Lizzie Robinson
Lizzie was from Govan and was a munitions worker at the Cardonald Projectile Factory who was famous for her dedication to the war effort by working seven 18 hour shifts a week. As a celebration for Lizzie's hard work and dedication to the war effort, she was the first recipient of the Medal of the Order of the British Empire by King George at Ibrox Park.
Private Lawrence Nealis
Private Lawrence Nealis was a soldier from Govan who wanted to join the war in order to follow in the footsteps of his father and brother, however, as he was underage he had used his brother's ID and was unfortunately killed by a sniper while working in France as part of the war effort. Before this had happened, he wrote a note to say that any personal belongings were to be passed on to his mother and when he had died and earned three war medals which have since been returned to the Nealis family.
The Lyceum
The New Lyceum is a particular building on McGechnie Street in Govan was a theatre and music hall which was burned down and then rebuild as this art deco cinema which became famous to many for being a very smart and friendly and holds many fond memories for many people in Govan.
