Pageant Queen

Picture
Beauty pageants have always interested me in that they only really consider one kind of beauty. We are shown women who are of a perfect figure with flawless skin and flawless hair who's entire livelihood is based on their physical appearance. The fact pageants promote this image can be quite damaging to young girls as it can represent a very shallow idea of beauty.

But this is just one side of it.

I feel some of the women involved are very intelligent but it is the producers of these kind of shows that makes them appear stupid. The spectacle of the show would be ruined if they were presented in such a way that made them seem both smart and attractive so the creators of these shows had to cater to the misogynists who fund these shows and make them appear as nothing more than pretty objects.

This piece started as a satire for this idea of plastic beauty and its inevitable decay but it developed into a celebration for the ignored intellect of pageant queens and the emotional sincerity some of them have.

Of course everyone wants world peace, but most people are too scared of looking stupid.
