Director: Adam Castle
Composer/Musical Director: Aidan Teplitzky
Producer: Pearce Cullen
Premiered: Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show 2017, June 3rd - June 11th
In a sexually charged nocturnal landscape of nightclubs, hotel rooms and theatres, four people battle for power as they force each other to perform and watch.
Two women, Vanessa and Ms. Pasture, and two men, Redbrick and Phelix, find themselves in a swirl of interconnecting vignettes as they sing, dance, dress and undress for each other.
Redbrick pays Phelix to watch him dance, Phelix turns Ms. Pasture into a drag queen and Ms. Pasture peels back the unconscious Redbrick's eyes so he can watch Vanessa.
Song No.1 – This Is It
The perfect number for any musical audition goes horribly wrong when Ms. Pasture is succumbed to the snide 'encouragement' of Vanessa that leaves her a defeated performer at the hands of her critic.
Instrumentation
Mezzo – Soprano voice, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bb Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Drum kit (consisting of Kick Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Tom 1,2,3, HiHat and Crash cymbal's)
Duration
2 minutes
Song No.2 – Keep Your Body Moving
We are transported into a jazz club where Ms. Pasture, Vanessa and Redbrick are performing a lively opening number, but Redbrick has forgotten the song and is left exposed to the chastising of Vanessa and Ms. Pasture while the band are left to fall into complete carnage trying to rectify the situation.
Instrumentation
2x Mezzo – Soprano voice, Baritone voice, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Drum kit (consisting of Kick Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Tom 1,2,3, HiHat and Crash cymbal's) and Double Bass.
Duration
2 minutes
Song No.3 – Fear and Adored
Redbrick is alone onstage, singing an emotional ballad when he suddenly collapses and the compere, Ms. Pasture, forces the only audience member, Vanessa, to take his place, all the while the unconscious Redbrick is manipulated by Ms. Pasture to watch. After all, the show must go on.
Instrumentation
Baritone voice, Mezzo – Soprano voice, Accordion
Duration
6 minutes
Song No.4 – I Choose You
In the final number, Phelix is left singing a karaoke ballad when he is joined by his new love Redbrick, but just when we believe love has triumphed in this world of power and manipulation, Vanessa arrives and demands they follow her every word. The two men are left fighting for her affection by outperforming each other, leading to them collapsing into a fight on the floor to relieve their frustration over not being chosen by Vanessa and their sexual tension towards each other. As the song continues, the plastic sounds of the karaoke number transform into a real band as Ms. Pasture returns to dominate Vanessa, leaving the viewer to see the reality of the situation in the final tableaux of the film.
Instrumentation
Tenor voice, Baritone Voice, Midi Alto Saxophone, Midi Bb Trumpet, Midi Trombone, Midi Keyboard, Midi Drum kit, Midi Bass Guitar, Live Piano, Live Drum Kit and Live Bass Guitar
Duration
5 minutes
