What's it all about?
The Role of the Programme Notes on my Compositional Practice

Picture
This brief piece of research looks into my own experience of programme notes and of their pertinence in my compositional practice. The piece in question, "Patchwork", was an early version of "Weaving". Since conducting this research, I have found that I have strayed further and further away from over-explanatory programme notes in that I feel that they over-explain, and in some ways invalidate, the whole point of a piece of music: to listen to it. I feel that as a symbiotic entity to the piece itself, a programme note should not act as an 'Ikea guide" to every little stage in the process as I think this actually creates distance from myself, as the composer, rather than provide insight into my work. I would rather have an audience take from my work whatever they can, with the programme note and title acting as a framing device in order to provide some focus.
